BECA 510: Music Performance, Recording, and Production

This website is created for students from San Francisco State University’s Music Performance, Recording, and Production (BECA 510) course in the Broadcast Electronic Communication Arts Major. You will use this private website to access course content, such as the syllabus, modules, readings, videos, and audio resources.
Each module contains readings, videos, presentations, and activities designed to help you understand the course material before class. Together, these resources will build your knowledge of live sound reinforcement and prepare you for hands-on learning.
Throughout the semester, you will work in teams to provide sound reinforcement for live performances on campus, serving in professional production roles such as front of house engineer, monitor engineer, and broadcast engineer.
Upon completion of this course, students will be better equipped with the knowledge for live sound reinforcement, recording, and production. Please check the course bulletin for details.

Syllabus
This is your guide to the class. All information relating the course is included on the syllabus such as grade breakdown, course calendar, activity and project details, attendance policy, and disability accommodations.
Equipment Room
This course may require students to check out audio recording devices from the LCA Equipment Hub. Below you will find some resources, one of which is the link to Cheqroom, which you’ll use to reserve gear.
Slack
Slack will be our primary form of communication outside of class. Slack is quick and efficient way to communicate with me, other students, and small groups. Slack also allows users to send attachments. If you need quick support, you can reach me and other students through Slack.
Zoom
Zoom will not be implemented for this course, however, in the case of an emergency, or if you’d like to meet for various reasons, the link to my Zoom room is below. If you don’t already have Zoom, you can use the link below to download the application. In case you need it, the password for my Zoom link is 995177.
Pro Tools
Pro Tools is an audio program that allows users to record, mix, and conduct post production tasks for all things audio related. The computers in MH 219 have Pro Tools installed, so it is not a requirement to purchase Pro Tools. However, if you are interested, you can use the link below to purchase a monthly or annual subscription with and educational discount.
Video Tutorials
Throughout the course, you will be introduced to various Pro Tools video tutorials created either by myself or other audio professionals. You can use the link below to access the repository of video tutorials shown throughout the semester. Please note this page is a work in progress and will be updated periodically.
Audio Resources
If you’re interested in getting a deeper understanding of audio, you can use the link below to view various audio resources. Though this page is for optional viewing, it can help strengthen your understanding of audio and shed light on topics that we may not have discussed in class.

I am the instructor for this course. Although, it’s optional, you can learn more about me on my personal page. I’ve taught at SFSU for almost 14 years and am currently working as a recording/mixing engineer at Trakworx Recording and Mastering where I’ve been for about 8 years.
